First let me first say Big Haole’s seasonings have been a stable at my grill and smoker. When I was asked to try Aunty Jen’s Hela Wela blend as a taste tester while it was in development I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was presented to me as “our hottest blend yet” and I was expecting to burn the lips, need a glass of milk, etc. Let me walk you through my taste testing experience with blend. I received the first bottle at work. I didn’t want to wait until I got home to sample so I poured some straight out of the bottle to try. All I could think was WOW…… There is way more to this season than heat….. and a very pleasant heat that covers the entire mouth. The heat does not overwhelm as it settles in. It slowly spreads throughout the mouth while unleashing the flavors of the seasoning. The fruitiness of the Habanero and smoke of the Kiawe had me at hello. Normally I purchase a seasoning to put on the food I’m making. Hela Wela had me thinking of food to purchase for this seasoning. It had me imagining way beyond the grill and smoker. Fresh tropical fruits, any Mexican street food, and brunch, one of my favorite meals. I’ve tried Hela Vela on all stated and again all I can say is WOW. Now for the bad part……my sample bottle is now empty and I have to wait for Hela Vela’s first production run to buy more. Hope you enjoy this blend as much as I do.
